by Tony DiTerlizzi

The classic tale of good versus evil set in a galaxy far, far away quickly became a cultural phenomenon during its time, inspiring a generation of story lovers and storytellers. Now, the original trilogy of Star Wars shines anew in this remarkable picture book, which pairs the iconic paintings of Ralph McQuarrie, the legendary concept artist behind A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, with text by acclaimed New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi.

Activity: Reader's Theater

Reader's Theater is a great tool to improve students' language fluency, reading motivation, and confidence. It also encourages cooperation and enthusiasm as students work together in groups. To use the reader's theater scripts for The Adventures of Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight, read one of the scripts aloud. Discuss how actors emphasize certain words to create meaning, and introduce simple techniques (such as highlighting or underlining) to help students remember to do this. Next, put students in small groups and assign each group member a different character from the script. Ask each student to think about the character's traits and role within a story before they begin reading with the group. Remind students that they don't have to memorize their lines but of course suggest that students practice and have fun playing with their lines. After students have had sufficient practice time, invite them to share their readings with the class, or have them perform the readings for other classes.
